When to Use Wet and Dry Sandpaper

Sanding sheets cover the areas a DA sander can't reach, such as door handle recesses, tight edges and small repairs where a disc would cut through. Coarser grits are used dry on a hand block to shape filler and putties, while finer grits are used wet to stop the paper from clogging when flatting primer and clear coat. 3M's process uses P800 to P1000 hand abrasives on primer around edges and borders. After wet sanding, clean panels with degreasing wipes before paint.

Sanding Sheets FAQs

Should I wet sand or dry sand?

Dry sand body filler and putty, as they can absorb water. For primers, check the technical data sheet. Some are made to be wet sanded, and others are not.

Which grits do I need for a small filler repair?

Plan on a coarse sheet for shaping, a mid grit for the feather edge, and a finer one for primer. 3M's chart uses P120 and P180 on filler and P320 to P500 on primer. Buying single sheets lets you pick one or two of each.

Can I buy sanding sheets in bulk?

Yes. The Siaflex 50-sheet pack suits workshops that go through a lot of one grit.

Can I use sanding paper on a block?

Yes. Cut or fold sheets to fit your hand block or file board. For long, flat panels, a sandpaper roll on a longer block covers more area per stroke.
