Masking Tape NZ

      Choosing the Right Masking Tape

Match tape to the job: Car masking tape and auto masking tape both need to suit the coating going over them. High-temperature automotive masking tape is built to hold through bake cycles and solvent exposure, with a low risk of tearing clearcoat on removal, a common pick for bodylines, jambs and longer masking runs.

Go thinner for detail work: Thin masking tape and fine line masking tape follow curves and body creases cleanly, holding a sharp edge for colour separations, stripes and panel work where a standard width leaves a ragged line.

Double up for mounting jobs: Double sided masking tape, also called double stick masking tape, is not for paint lines. It suits holding trim, badges and mouldings in place during fitting or removal, where a standard adhesive strip will not hold.

Stock paper alongside tape: For jobs needing both, masking tape and paper sold together saves a trip back to the shelf, useful when working through several panels in one session. Larger areas are often better covered with masking film instead.

      Masking Tape FAQs

Can I use standard household tape for automotive painting?

No. Household tape cannot handle solvents, heat or extended spray sessions, and often bleeds or lifts part way through a job. Automotive masking tape is built specifically for refinishing work.

What width masking tape should I choose?

Narrower widths suit trim, edges and detail work, while wider tape covers bigger panels in fewer strips and holds better under longer masking runs.

What is double sided masking tape used for?

It is designed for mounting and bonding jobs, not paint lines. Use standard masking tape for anything going near primer, basecoat or clear.

Will masking tape damage paint on removal?

Automotive masking tape is designed to release cleanly once fully cured. Leaving tape on too long, or in direct sun for extended periods, increases the risk of residue or lifting.
